How parents can encourage good reading habits at home

“There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.” – Walt Disney

Reading is one of the most fundamental habits a student needs to develop for holistic growth. Good reading habits not only benefit students to perform better in academics, but it also helps them to acquire success lifelong. Reading promotes a better attention span, improves vocabulary, and helps develop strong analytical thinking. Apart from these benefits, raising an avid reader will ensure that the child is not spending a majority of their leisure time hooked on to a screen. Encouraging children to read at home is not at all the same as encouraging them to read in the classroom. As the best CBSE-affiliated School in South Kolkata, we are here to share some easy-to-implement tips and tricks that will help parents to encourage their children to read and will help instill a love of reading for pleasure in them too.

Create a reading space

Create a special reading nook for children. Make it a pretty corner in the room that they would love to slide into. Keep a soft mattress, some pillows, a book box, some bookmarks, etc. to make sure that they have the perfect spot to get away from the daily hustle and bustle. Place a lamp too so that they can be comfortable in the place for nighttime reading. Once they have a well-decorated corner of the room to themselves, you will notice their urge to spend more time reading in the nook will start increasing.

Family reading time

Allot some time of the day for reading together. Parents can read anything, newspapers, magazines, etc., and encourage the students to read something of their choice during the allotted time. Children learn by watching. You will notice, that once they see their parents indulge in regular reading, they will grow the habit too even if they are reluctant readers at first. The key is to not give up.

Choose a character

Let the children read books belonging to a series. Help them find a character they love. Once they find a character they love, they will look forward to reading the first book and will want to read the complete series. Some books that have characters children often fall in love with can be the Harry Potter series, Narnia Series, Famous Five, and Secret Seven. There are many such books of different genres that appeal to children. Once they finish reading one series, you will see they will be hooked and will want to keep reading.

Start with anything

As educators and the best CBSE-affiliated School in Kolkata, we can tell you that convincing a reluctant reader to read can be very challenging. In that case, we suggest not compelling them to read only story books or novels. Encourage them to read books or even magazines on topics they are interested in. Inspire them to read magazines like Tell Me Why, Magic Pot, Tinkle, etc. Magazines cover different topics that will be interesting to them and it will be easier to hook them on to the habit of reading.

At Jyotirmoy Public School, the best CBSE-affiliated School in Kolkata; we strive for the holistic development of a child and encourage our students to develop regular reading habits. To know more about our curriculum and admission procedure, visit www.jpsedu.in
